Why I write songs….
I remember it like it was yesterday. 13 years old. Sitting in my papasan chair, black light on, illuminating my Pearl Jam poster hanging on the ceiling. Eddie Vedder’s voice, the lead singer of my favorite band, traveled through the speaker and directly into my veins. I thought to myself “this music, these words, this voice are in my blood. They’re a part of me. They feel like home.” I felt less alone.
And in that moment a thought that would change the course of my life.
“I want to make people feel the way that he makes me feel”.
I didn’t know it then- that that thought would inform my future. Only in looking back and having a visceral memory did I realize that where I am and the choices I made were in part due to that moment. And that inadvertently that’s what I’ve managed to do.
I’ve been writing and performing songs in some capacity since 2001. I measure my success in tears from the audience which believe it or not, means I’m very successful. I’ve somehow been able to do what I promised to do in that papasan chair.
I make people feel. I move people with my songs. I consider that to be the greatest gift of my life.
I might not be performing at MSG but when people tell me that my song transported them or that they were moved to tears, my mission is confirmed.
Now, I make people feel in various ways. I write original songs for various occasions. Weddings, proposals, memorials, anniversaries, birthdays and just because.
I teach songwriters how to connect with their own voice and musical style so that they can move people with their music.
I use music and songwriting as a way to express myself and I think it’s the coolest talent in the world.
Thank you for stopping by. Let’s work together to spread more music and more love in this world.
